01

Define the avocado you need

Set out the intended use, preferred variety, maturity requirements, size range, condition on arrival and your planned delivery window. Retail, wholesale, foodservice and ripening programmes can have different priorities. An agreed specification gives sourcing and packing a common reference.

02

Varieties and seasonal supply

Hass and Fuerte feature in official Kenyan avocado export notices. Their mention here is industry context, not a confirmed Ken Fresh Growers stock list. Ask us to confirm the varieties, origin lots and volumes available for your requested dates.

03

Timing needs current confirmation

Kenyan avocado export openings and restrictions can be announced for a particular season. A historical calendar is not a shipment commitment. Check current authority notices, fruit maturity and programme availability before agreeing a loading date. We do not publish a fixed company supply calendar without verified data.

04

Quality and packing

Discuss how size, appearance and maturity will be assessed, what tolerances apply and how packing records will identify the order. Carton formats, counts, labeling and pallet arrangements are confirmed against the buyer brief; no standard company pack sizes are assumed.

05

From inquiry to shipment discussion

Tell us the destination country and port or airport, quantity and units, shipment window and any buyer requirements. We will need to agree supply, packaging and commercial responsibilities before an order can progress. Destination eligibility, documentation and freight arrangements require confirmation for the individual shipment.

06

Maturity and ripeness answer different questions

Maturity concerns whether fruit has reached the stage required for the intended programme; ripeness concerns its eating or handling condition at a particular point. A buyer requesting firm fruit should still define the maturity evidence needed. Do not replace that requirement with a colour description or the words “ready for export”. Ask who samples the lot, what is assessed and how the result will be connected to the consignment.

07

An avocado specification buyers can compare

Separate variety, fruit size, maturity, external condition, carton format and arrival expectations into distinct fields. If you refer to a trade standard, identify the standard and version rather than simply asking for a premium grade. UNECE publishes FFV-42 for avocados as a commercial quality reference. Its use in a particular sale, and the buyer’s additional requirements, need agreement; it does not establish company certification.

08

Supply planning for repeat orders

For a repeat programme, share both the preferred weekly requirement and the flexibility in timing or size grouping. Distinguish a trial consignment from a recurring commitment. Agree when availability is checked and how changes are communicated before materials or freight are booked. A repeat-order discussion should keep the product specification stable while making any changes in source lot or shipment timing visible.

09

Before accepting an offer

Check that the offer describes the same fruit, packaging, shipment period and commercial responsibilities as your inquiry. Clarify whether the quantity refers to net fruit weight, cartons or another unit. Identify who arranges inspection and shipment documents, who books freight and where handover occurs. A complete offer is easier to evaluate than a price detached from its specification and delivery scope.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

More about your programme.

Do you supply Hass and Fuerte avocados?

Both are relevant to the Kenyan industry, but the varieties and source lots available from Ken Fresh Growers must be confirmed for the requested programme. Mention your preference and whether alternatives are acceptable.

What avocado carton sizes are available?

No company packaging format has been confirmed for publication. Include your preferred count or net weight, carton specification and labeling needs in the inquiry so that material availability can be checked.

Can I use a fixed seasonal calendar to book a shipment?

A broad calendar is planning context. Order timing still depends on current official notices, the proposed lot, maturity and programme availability. Confirm those points before treating a date as committed.

Plan the ripening outcome before comparing avocado offers

Bulk avocado suppliers in Kenya may describe a harvest-ready crop, a packed lot or a delivery programme. Ask which stage the offer actually covers. A ripener purchasing firm fruit will need different evidence from a foodservice customer expecting fruit close to use. Define the intended handover stage, the customer’s next handling step and the time available before sale.

If you are asking about Hass avocado exports from Kenya, request the sample’s maturity and harvest context alongside variety identification. For a Fuerte avocado inquiry, use a separate green-skinned reference instead of expecting Hass colour behaviour. Compare the varieties before agreeing an acceptable substitute. A variety name alone does not establish the present condition or market eligibility of the lot.

Describe a defect observation without guessing its cause

Record the lot reference, sample location and inspection time when reporting cuts, rub marks, sunburn, shrivelling or uneven softening. If fruit is cut for internal assessment, photograph the sample and explain how it was selected. A visible symptom is useful evidence, but it should not be turned into a disease diagnosis or a statement about the entire shipment without suitable assessment.

Ask the technical team to distinguish the condition visible at packing from a concern identified after transport or ripening. Keep earlier observations, handling information and the agreed inspection stage together. The avocado buyer’s guide provides a fuller procurement discussion; the avocado packing page covers the service specification for fruit you already own.

Avocado maturity, ripeness and postharvest care

Dry matter is used as an avocado maturity index and is related to oil content, as explained by UC Davis. The interpretation is cultivar-specific; a firm fruit is not automatically immature, and a soft fruit is not proof of a suitable harvest decision. Ask the responsible technical team to identify the sampling method, the represented lot and the current applicable criterion. Do not transfer a threshold from an overseas reference directly into a Kenyan order without checking its relevance.

Use a lot-specific handling instruction after harvest. UC Davis describes chilling injury and internal disorders whose expression depends on cultivar, maturity or ripeness stage and exposure. A colder setting is therefore not automatically a better storage plan. Confirm the proposed temperature management, expected duration and monitoring responsibility with the qualified party handling the actual fruit; this page does not provide a universal storage setpoint or guaranteed shelf life.

For a quotation, separate the evidence about harvest maturity from the desired stage at delivery. State who will assess each question and whether the buyer plans a later ripening step. This makes it possible to discuss a firm-fruit supply programme without implying that the fruit should already look or feel ready to eat. Keep the approved sample and technical instructions connected to the final product brief.
