Avocado packing
services in Kenya.
Prepare your avocado programme around receiving, inspection, sorting, grading and packing requirements, with a clear record from source lot to dispatch.
Request packing services
Before fruit arrives
Provide the source lot, variety if known, harvest dates, estimated volume and intended destination. Explain whether the order is intended for a ripener, wholesaler, retailer or another customer. Those details help define what the packing service must achieve.
Inspection with an agreed specification
Appearance alone is not a complete acceptance specification. Discuss maturity assessment, external defects, size distribution and any sampling or testing required by your buyer. Confirm which checks are available and how acceptance decisions will be documented.
Sorting and grading for the order
Agree how unsuitable fruit will be segregated and how accepted avocados will be grouped. A useful specification defines size or count expectations, tolerances and the treatment of fruit outside those limits. Do not assume one market grade applies to every destination.
Pack design and careful handling
Carton strength, ventilation, fruit support and the intended handling route belong in the same discussion. Confirm counts, net weights, labeling and pallet configuration before materials are ordered. Specific carton sizes and packing formats are quoted only once availability is confirmed.
A clear handover
Ask for the relationship between source lots, packed quantities and dispatch records to be included in the service agreement. Confirm the holding period and collection plan. Packing supports product presentation and order consistency; it does not replace destination approval or phytosanitary requirements.
Keep the source lot useful through packing
The lot identity should carry meaning beyond the incoming vehicle or crate. Connect it to the supplier record, acceptance decision and the cartons produced. If the order involves several source lots, agree whether they remain separate and how the output will be reconciled. This supports a practical answer when a buyer asks which fruit was included in a specific dispatch.
Sorting is a decision; grading is a grouping
Sorting determines which avocados are suitable for the intended order. Grading groups accepted fruit according to the agreed size and condition specification. The two stages should not be merged into a vague promise of quality. Define the handling of rejected fruit, the acceptable groups and who approves an alternative use for fruit outside the requested range.
Make the carton brief operational
Identify the required count or net weight, carton format, labels and pallet configuration before the service period. If your materials include brand artwork, agree the approval process and the point after which a change affects timing. Check whether label information and lot references need to match a buyer system. Every requirement should be understandable by the person preparing the pack.
Reconcile packed fruit with received fruit
Ask for a clear separation of received quantities, accepted quantities, rejects and final output, using consistent units. Explain how partially packed lots or materials shortages should be recorded. If an avocado lot produces a different size distribution from the brief, agree the decision before packing into an alternative format. The service report should explain the outcome rather than leave the customer to infer it.

More about your programme.
Is maturity testing included?
Describe the test or evidence your buyer requires and ask what can be confirmed in the service scope. A general inspection description does not establish that a particular test is available.
Can I provide my own cartons and labels?
Include customer-supplied materials in the request. Their suitability, quantity, delivery timing and approval need to be agreed before the packing date.
What happens to rejected avocados?
Agree the record, ownership, temporary holding and collection arrangements in advance. Rejected or out-of-specification fruit should have an explicit decision route.

Keep harvest identity visible through the packing order
A delivery may contain fruit from more than one harvest date or orchard. Ask whether those portions should remain separate, how they are marked at intake and who authorizes any consolidation. A packhouse cannot reconstruct reliable farm-level detail from unmarked fruit after lots have been mixed. Give the receiving team the same references that appear on the delivery note.
If a lot contains fruit at visibly different stages, decide whether it should be held for assessment, separated into groups or declined under the agreed criteria. A service order should identify who makes that decision and how it is communicated to the owner. Sorting instructions should not become an informal permission to relabel or conceal a nonconforming delivery.
Review an avocado pack with the fruit it will contain
A carton sample without fruit cannot show every fit issue. Compare an assembled pack with representative fruit from the proposed size range, considering support, closure and handling. A count change can alter the arrangement even when the carton’s printed dimensions remain the same. Long-necked or round varieties also need attention to their actual shape.
Before release, reconcile the owner’s accepted quantity with packed output, fruit set aside and any separately agreed disposition. Keep the record in a unit that can be compared with the intake measurement. See how avocado packing works and avocado grading and packaging for worked commercial decisions.
